Managing the investment managers

ClearView's Investment Philosophy is to use a team of internal and external experts to "manage the managers" selected to invest your money. All the work in selecting, monitoring and replacing (if appropriate) the managers is done for you, so you can spend your time enjoying your retirement; not worrying about how your money is being managed.

In selecting and monitoring the investment managers, input is sought from Intech Investment Consultants (Intech). Intech is a leading Australian investment consultant whose primary focus is the provision of specialist multi-manager investment products. Intech was founded in 1989 to provide investment advice to large corporate and institutional clients. Their research strengths have seen them grow to over A$29 billion (March 2007) in assets under advice and management for some of Australia's largest institutional investors.

At the end of 2006 global finances services giant Old Mutual acquired Intech, integrating the wholesale business within its Australian retail subsidiary Australian Skandia Limited (Skandia). The combined Australian funds under management (FUM) of Intech and Skandia are in excess of A$14 billion (March 2007).

Intech now forms the investments and consulting arm of Skandia in Australia. Globally, the Old Mutual Group has approximately A$550 billion (October 2006) in FUM, with operations in over 40 countries across the United Kingdom, Europe, North and South America, Africa and Asia. In relation to international investment managers, Intech uses the research capabilities of its global manager research partner, Rogerscasey, to enhance their own intense research process. Through the combined benefit of Intech's strong Australian presence and Rogerscasey's international expertise, Intech's clients are guaranteed timely access to information on the local as well as international investment industry.

Intech provides ClearView with advice on:

  • the return and volatility objectives for the ClearView investment options;
  • how best to diversify across various types of investments (such as shares, fixed interest, property) to achieve the objectives;
  • choosing an appropriate mix of specialist managers for each type of asset class used to achieve the targeted results; and
  • the processes the managers use, their people and the results they are achieving and can be expected to achieve in future.

To provide this advice, Intech uses its analytical and statistical skills and tools to research investment market data and, based on this, to produce estimates of future return and volatility of market returns for individual types of investments. This forms the basis of modelling results that could be expected from portfolios that combine various investment types, allowing for the fact that return and volatility of these types of investments can be linked with each other. Intech's staff and Intech's international partners also conduct detailed reviews of investment managers through desk research and visits and regular contact with investment managers.
